Being a talented makeup artist is one of the best ways to make money. It isn’t uncommon anymore to see women (and men!) becoming millionaires due to their immense talent in the beauty industry. People even profess their love of makeup on social media, making YouTube videos promoting their favorite brands and products, creating Instagram pages where they showcase their own abilities, and more.

So, you’ve decided that you want to become a makeup artist, but you’re not sure where to begin. Maybe you’ve been doing makeup on your close family members and friends for years, but now you want to expand and potentially turn this talent into a small business.

Being able to get more clients can certainly demand a lot of hard work, but that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible or that you should ever think about giving up.

Here is some of our best advice on different ways to get more clients as a budding makeup artist.

  1. Ask your customers for referrals.
We’re sure that you’re aware that one of the best ways to get people to know about you is through word-of-mouth. You’ve probably been practicing for a while on different clients, including your friends and close family members. Ask them- don’t be embarrassed!- to tell their friends about you or even promote your work on social media. What some people even like to do is provide discounts to those who refer them, but this is totally up to you.
  2. Create a blog or website.
It is important that you maintain your presence on the Internet. Creating a website will allow you to display information such as your prices, location, and portfolio. Also, creating a blog gives you the opportunity to write about different topics, such as current gigs, tutorials, and reviews of your favorite products. It’s a must that you create a website for your business. People can even book you for appointments this way. And, it doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot of money, which is good news if you’re just starting out.
  3. Create ads using Google Adwords and direct traffic to your landing pages.
Paid advertisements are one of the best ways for you to attract a larger number of clients. You will be able to target your audience based on factors such as gender, age, interests, and location. Google Adwords is a good service to use when you’re creating your advertisement. Then, when people click on it, it’s important that you have an attractive landing page. Pagewiz is a great example of a platform that will help you to do this. A landing page might include information such as your name, a picture of you, an ‘about me’ section, photos of your work, why people should choose your services, testimonials, and contact information. You should also make sure that the visuals are appealing. Doing so will make you more competitive and expand your clientele.
  4. Make a YouTube channel.
We’ve already established that YouTube is a great way to promote yourself among a wider audience- and it has especially taken off in recent years. People who once had difficulty making ends meet are now some of the hottest faces in the industry because of their informative and high-quality YouTube videos. Millions of people across the world turn to YouTube to discover what other people have to say about different makeup products and brands, how to do certain techniques, and other pointers that makeup artists would be well-suited to provide. The more helpful and informative your videos are.
  5. Establish your presence on social media.
Social media is, perhaps, the best way for you to market yourself. It’s arguably impossible nowadays to promote a business without establishing some sort of presence on social media. Some of the best sites for promoting your makeup artistry business include Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. On these sites, you will be able to promote your work, post pictures of different makeup looks, discuss your favorite products, offer discounts, and more. Having a social media presence will make it easier for people to contact you and hire you to do makeup for their events. Be sure to include all your contact information and where you can be located
  6. Network with other makeup artists in your area.
This might seem counterproductive, but knowing your competition is absolutely necessary, especially when you’re just starting out. Speaking to other makeup artists means that you can both share knowledge with each other, techniques, and other tips and tricks that you might not have been aware of before. This is also a great way for you to find new products for expanding your collection. And, in addition, it’s possible that other makeup artists might refer their clients to you if you build close connections with them during the holidays, prom season, or other times when they might not have the time to accept new clients.
  7. Get special training.
Even if you’re talented on your own, you might want to look into getting special training so that your clients can have a bit more confidence in trusting you after having the proper certification. This is especially true if you want to work with a more specific type of makeup, such as stage makeup, runway makeup, or movie makeup. It is important to do proper research on any schools that you’re interested in to make sure that they have the right accreditation
  8. Network with other makeup artists in your area.
